My cousin had a video I only saw a handful of times. I have no idea if it was just a one off home video or if it was from a running tv series (if it was, I feel like it would be easier to find). Had to be from the early to mid 80s. If I remember correctly it started out as a cartoon (the intro with the song) and then turned into "live action" with puppets. It was a bunch of bears inside trees reporting the news; either it was completely structured like a normal news program, or the whole thing was about "putting on the production". I can see it in my head, a bear anchor sitting behind a desk holding papers. Perhaps my imagination fills in the blanks a bit...

Internet searches for this just bring up "The Bad News Bears".

This has been driving me crazy for 25 years. Sound familiar?

Possible:
This is mid 90s but there is Jim Henson's Animal Show with Stinky and Jake, although that is in the form of a talk show.

Live action
puppet news segmwnt

Wild guess
Maybe,...

The Great Space Coaster (81)

Gary Gnu wasn't a bear though
and the news studio and settings
were probably in or on an asteriod
or planetoid.
There was a bird puppet that lived in a tree

Wow. Great suggestions, but it wasn't either of those. I feel like it was very much like The Great Space Coaster, but I don't recall any interaction between live actor and puppet.
