Warner Archive Collection, the group that has been putting so many Hanna Barbera productions on DVD lately (via its "Manufacture on Demand" program), (http://www.wbshop.com/Hanna-Barbera/HANNABARBERA,default,sc.html?AID=10811526&PID=38216) has confirmed that they do own the rights to the "Challenge of the GoBots" cartoon series and that fans can look for it come to DVD soon!
Hopefully, the movie- "GoBots: Battle of the Rock Lords" might follow it too.
I remember both the GoBots and its more popular rival series, The Transformers, on TV as a kid. I think I had some toys from both cartoon series. In any case, it's cool to see this lesser remembered but still pretty cool show coming to DVD. Very Happy Cool

Also, if you check the Warner Archive Facebook page they answered some other fan questions, namely that the Centurions was also coming to DVD. It looks like they plan on releasing all the Hanna-Barbera stuff. Hopefully that means Ruby Spears stuff as well that they "consider" to be HB (like Thundarr.)

I hope they also finish off the Rankin/Bass stuff with a second volume of Silverhawks and Tigersharks...

This is awesome! I was a bigger fan of the GoBots than Transformers. Not because I wanted to be though. My parents didn't really know the difference between the two and GoBot toys were cheaper, so I got those.

One of my favorite bad guy names in all of toons is Cy-Kill

Thanks for the info, smurfwreck. I hadn't heard about The Centurions coming to DVD too! Cool! Cool
I would also love to see the rest of SilverHawks and all of TigerSharks (and the other cartoons from "The Comic Strip" - Karate Kat, Street Frogs, and The Mini-Monsters) come to DVD too. Very Happy

This DVD set is looking like it's coming out in May, but still no definite word on that. However, here's a better look at the cover art for the DVD- though it may still change.

Okay- we've got an official date now- May 17th.!
http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Challenge-GoBots-The-Original-Mini-Series/15326

And it looks like this will be just be the original mini series, rather than the entire cartoon show's run. But hopefully that will follow soon.

Gobots was a total classic. I haven't seen any episodes in decades though so I was happy to see this thread. I'm surprised they're coming out with this. I wouldn't have thought there would be enough trueheads for this to be financially viable. I'll have to get my new HDTV in time for this release. How are the prices at hh gregg?

Yeah- "Gobots" is kinda derided by some fans as a ripoff of "Transformers" but I remember both in the '80s and I like them both just fine.
And hey- welcome to the forums, Gorilla! Very Happy Cool

Ahhhh GoBots, one of the only Non-Japanese animated series based upon a Japanese toyline (machine robo)!

Ill be getting this set for sure. Its like the Transformers cheesy little brother thats trying to be just as cool but just ends up being a goofball. Thats the GoBots. Fun Stuff!

Great news! I can ditch my bootlegs for some proper quality. Keep us posted.

Also, didn't Tonka distribute the toys in North America? If not own them all together?

Yep- I will endeavor to post more as I find out more. Smile Cool
And yes- Tonka did own the Gobots. But it got bought out by Hasbro in 1991, so now The Gobots belong to Hasbro. Which makes me think- It would be cool if Hasbro would do a Transformers/Gobots crossover special at some point- that would be really cool. A comic book or cartoon TV special, animated movie or straight-to-video release or something...... Very Happy Cool

Ah, unfortunately, Wikipedia has now informed of why this hasn't happened........
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gobots

(Apparently, Hasbro only has the rights as far as characters and storylines- but actual likenesses of the characters and figure molds, etc. still belong to Bandai/Tonka.)
