It must be pre 1986 but post 1980......Gremlin!

I have this fond memory of watching a pirate-ish tv show as a child. The captain rescued some sort and animal from a net and named it Gremlin. Please help my memory is shot from the 90's. I can't even remember if it was in space or water. After he saved Gremlin he always stayed with the captain.
