sad cartoon set on alien planet

Unfortunately, the only concrete details I have are contextual; I'm pretty sure I watched this show during a saturday morning block either in '88 or '89 that also included The Gummi Bears and the Ed Grimley cartoon.

All I remember is that it took place on a desolate alien planet and that it centered around a boy looking for something (his family?). He had a pet that was either a dog or a dog-like alien. Mostly I remember the tone of the cartoon being really sad and hopeless.

I know it's not much, but I'd like to know if I imagined the whole show or not.
