Characters escaping from a dream? Need help.

I can't remember much about a cartoon I remember from the late 80s. Basically I remember it being about some guy who falls asleep and you get to see what he's dreaming. Eventually the people in his dream realize that they are part of a dream world. To keep themselves from disappearing when the guy wakes up, they figure out how to get out of his dream and try to keep him sleeping. I remember them doing stuff like wrapping his alarm clock in pillows to keep him from waking up.

I don't remember much else. It might have been on PBS, but I'm not sure.

Any ideas on what it might be?
