I kid you not. There is a new Star Trek movie being made. Not many details available yet but...check it out.

Oh yeah- I've heard about this. Star Trek 11- can't wait! Very Happy

From what I understand, J.J. Abrams (director of Mission: Impossible III- which was excellent! and Alias) will be directing this new movie. And he's got Kirk, Spock and McCoy (and I suppose the rest of the original crew) at a younger stage of their lives in the movie- Leonard Nimoy is supposed to cameo as the older Spock. And unfortunately, it seems William Shatner will not be appearing as Captain James Tiberius Kirk. But this may still change- hopefully it will.
I was a bit skeptical of this approach at first, but it might really work. The choices for the younger versions of the trio aren't too bad. I do have to admit that Matt Damon has a bit of a resemblance to William Shatner. And Adrien Brody does look much like Leonard Nimoy, though I suppose Zachary Quinto wouldn't be too bad either. But WOW- I never thought of it before, but when I saw the picture for it- whoa- Gary Sinise looks amazingly like DeForest Kelley!!! He would definitely be my top choice!
Anyway- I'm definitely a Trekkie and I believe in giving most everything at least one chance to see what it's like before I decide that it's necessarily going to be bad- so I will happily check this out when it comes out!

Set for release on Christmas Day 2008!

Yeah, last thing I heard was Shatner broke down in the last month or so on stage of a convention when asked this question. Poor guy. Granted I am more of a New Generation, or Deep Space 9 kind of guy, but Shatner is Star Trek.

Am I a trekkie? Nope. We call ourselves Trekkers.

And by the way, in regard to news of the movie- I just saw this posted the other day.

It appears Zoe Saldana has been cast as Lt. Uhura- and she does bear a striking resemblance to Nichelle Nichols, so that's cool. The article also reports that Anton Yelchin has been cast as Pavel Chekov.
I already knew that Leonard Nimoy was going to appear as Spock and I've recently heard that J.J. Abrams is trying to work in William Shatner as Captain Kirk- so it's possible he may still show up- which would be excellent!

So it seems a young Spock, Chekov, and Uhura have been cast. Now is there any definite word on Scotty, McCoy, and Sulu- and of course, James Kirk?

Of course, if Leonard Nimoy's scenes are set in the present time (as I would think it would be- but one never knows with Star Trek) then it is possible that other ST:TNG, ST:DS9, or ST:VOY characters could possibly cameo as well. Perhaps even some characters from ST:ENT - but that seems doubtful.

I wonder if we would see an appearance from the original captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise- Captain Pike! Cool

With the aspect of time travel being introduced in the script who knows what they'll do. It would be awesome to see Picard, Kirk, and Sisko all together.

In the trek-umentary Trekkies 2, they said Gene Roddenberry once stated at a convention that, "It's Trekkies. I should know. I invented it." It was after a fan tried arguing the point. Not Me! Shocked Either way, TREKKER 4 EVER! Razz

Here's a fan-made site where they are putting together a movie of their own. Has a few familiar faces showing up in it. Something to kill the time until we at least get a movie trailer.

I almost get the impression from this trailer that they are trying to go on a similer root as Enterprise did. What really drew me in as a fan was the high tech technology or at least the way they presented it made it look...cool. Enterprise with it's whole "just into space" thing really bugged me because the computers looked like computers and not interfaces you know? Hard to explain, but even the original Star Trek still had that feeling of "we belong here" and not "we are discovering things". Hard to explain but i really hope this movie stays away from the humans discovering space to just Kirk and the gang joining people in space.

Oddly enough I totally understand. Personally I never really got into Enterprise. I mean if we are to believe that they mastered warp speed and teleporting how come they're still working off mounted flat-screen monitors, and other technology that most likely in the next decade we'll have passed? Shocked

The premise looks promising though......Kirk and Spock: The Academy Years! With this team of actors I am really looking forward to this film. Can't wait to see how they're planning on working Nemoy into the film. Time travel! Woohoo! Those darn temporal anomalies! Very Happy

Anyways, I thought the teaser trailer was fun. Actually showing the building of the enterprise was pretty neat.

It was indeed pretty good. I'm not sure I'm quite to the awesome level, (I still have some mixed feelings on some things), but for the most part I did enjoy it.
