|Greetings fellow He-Fans and She-Ravers,
A year or two ago, Mattel decided to do a fan pick character vote for the Classics line. The match up was between fan demanded characters Huntara and Lord Masque. In the end Huntara won the vote for inclusion in the line and she has finally shown up.
Huntara appeared in the episode of the same name from the She-Ra series. In the episode Hordak summons her to Etheria to take out She-Ra as her people, the Silaxians, are regarded as the greatest warriors and hunters in the galaxy. However they apparently are unfamiliar with the Horde, and since they only battle evil doers, Hordak uses doctored video to convince her She-Ra is evil. Huntara captures Glimmer to lure She-Ra into battle and puts up a tough fight but is ultimately defeated. Only after is She-Ra able to convince her she was deceived. They are then both ambushed and captured by the Horde but team up and kick butt before escaping. Huntara departs as a friend ending her sole appearance. However there was a scripted but never produced sequel episode called "The Silaxian Wars" in which Hordak would launch an attack on Silax as retaliation against Huntara who would return and enlist She-Ra's help to save her homeworld. Many a fan wishes we could have seen this episode made.
Finally getting her first figure, Huntara comes in the standard MOTUC blister card package, but despite being a character from the She-Ra cartoon, she does not include the POP logo sticker on her bubble. The back of the box shows off other figures in the line, also showing Huntara holding the sword that came with Oo-Larr for some reason, and gives a bio for the character.
I simply cannot emphisize enough how stupid an idea it was to place Etheria inside Despondos. Now we're forced to have Silax in there as well despite earlier bios claiming Etheria was the one bright spot of life. It probably was worth mentioning Huntara's deep voice as that was one of her unique traits in the episode. It wasn't just raspy like Shadow Weaver, it was full deep, back of the throat, Dr. Claw like. Amazingly she was apparently voiced by Erica Schiemer who also did the high pitched voices of Loo-Kee and Imp. The last line of the bio makes it sound like Huntara is a mercenary lacking morals and only caring about money, but that is way off from the episode and actually contradicts the bio itself. Silaxians only battle evil. That was a very important factor in the episode. In fact the subject of Huntara's payment was never brought up. The only conditions Huntara mentioned were that she would only fight She-Ra if Hordak proved she was evil (which he did via lies) and then that it be a fair one on one fight with no interference on either side. (her honor being another factor that really should have been mentioned here)
Huntara captures her look out of the cartoon quite well with her sculpt and superb paint deco. Her purple skin, white hair and the blues and black of her outfit are all captured spot on and highlighted with metallic gold bracers and trim. At first glance you'd think she uses the Battleground Teela torso, but it is actually an all new buck as her armor is part of the sculpt instead of placed over. Her shoulder pads are glued on, but are flexible enough that they don't interfere with arm movement. She has new forearms with bracers, and new lower legs with covered ankle pins, though again we have a female with no boot cut swivel. Her feet are well done too with the look that has part of her skin showing. That's not just the paint job, it is sculpted that way.
Her head sculpt does a pretty good job of capturing her look. She could have stood to have a slightly more serious facial expression, but it still manages to capture her strong noble nature. Her unique hairstyle is represented with the white mohawk that leads into a long ponytail. The ponytail is a bit softer so it doesn't cause problems with head movement. Finally her facial markings are captured -though I'm not sure if they are supposed to be tattoos or war paint. (heck since she's an alien they may be natural markings)
For accessories she includes her twin energy blade weapons. In the cartoon they were referred to as stun swords. They're very lightsaber like and did activate the same way in the show with the blades emerging from the handles when a button was pressed. We didn't really get to see Huntara use them though as after she pulled them out She-Ra turned the Sword of Protection to rope and lassoed them out of Huntara's grip. (possibly indicating they don't have the same cutting power as a lightsaber, but remember that rope is still the Sword of Protection so it ain't gonna burn or cut) The swords are done with transparent green plastic and are good and firm, not gummy. Huntara has clips on her back to store them, as she did in the cartoon, though it would have been nice to have the blades able to come out so we could have deactivated swords to store, but that's a minor nitpick.
Now Huntara also includes another weapon, but it's not for her. In fact it wasn't even supposed to come with her. This is a stone axe designed for Oo-Larr, and was in fact supposed to be packed with him, but some kind of mix up happened at Mattel and the axe got slipped in with Huntara's stuff too late to change things. This wasn't a budget issue, someone just goofed up and put the weapon with the wrong figure to be packaged. The axe has a gritty savage feel to it and is not a bad addition to the line even if Oo-Larr himself is rather lame.
Huntara was another character from the cartoon that left a lasting impression with the fans and thus makes a welcome addition to the line. her figure turned out very well done in both sculpt and paint job and looks great standing alongside the Great Rebellion. Unfortunately she ended up as a character with no day of sale stock, though it makes a little bit more sense with this one as she was a fan choice figure for inclusion in the sub thus why shouldn't she be exclusive to subscribers? Remember though the difference between a no day of sale and a sub exclusive is a no day of sale can potentially show up for sale sometime in the future. There's no telling when or if though, so you're probably better off not chancing it and looking to the secondary market to get her. Good luck and, until next time, Good Journey.
